Evolution… It began in Africa. Beware the first 35 minutes are naughty, one could say raunchy.. If you play it at work, it is at your own peril.. This is NOT background music for your sunday lunch if the folks are visiting..

Naughty, Deep n' Sexy and rhythmic episode. We start in Chicago and Detroit, where House began, then slowly incorporate rhythmic roots from Africa, where " it all began", to finally fuse it up with Latin and Brazilian influences , all throughout with a distinct naughty undertone.

The set is both a challenge and an experiment, hence the title “Evolution… It began in Africa “.

A challenge, for I wanted to try rhythms and musical colours I usually shy away from.

An experiment, for I tried to build the set without looking at the beatgrid as a "beast" I needed to "tame". In all fairness, with these percussions and syncopated beats, the visual beatgrid is normally useless. Yet, without the comfort of the software finding the beatgrid, I had to dig deep and feel when, where and how to blend in the different layers of sounds I wanted to play with. A challenge to say the least.. but I wanted to learn how to do it before going back to the security and bliss of pure soulful house..

The first half hour is resolutely naughty to hook some of the listeners. Then, we dive into the rhythmic part with just enough sugar not to lose too many of you, to finally we settle in South America, a musical space I usually hardly cover.

There are treasures buried deep into the mix and I will re-use some of them in my next set, which I promise, will NOT be a challenge but just a fun, upfront house, happy episode.

Do not be taken aback with “It began in Africa”.. I really had to go there before dwelling back in my normal space. For this podcast to remain fun for me to do, I need to try new things and to…yes.. Evolve…

Highlights: not sure everyone will like the first 35 minutes but I sure had fun with the samples..

"Can You Feel It" is smooth deep and sexy house. I personally love the rhythmic rendition of Dennis Ferrer's classic "Touched The Sky" the remixer on Soundcloud shifted the key. It is slightly off key and pure genius!

"Domination" from Euphonik has all the wholemark of a future classic.

" Mi Ma Bo" at the junction of Latin, Maanzi and pure house is the track that insipred the set.

Do not miss "Yesterday's Gone" from Spiritchaser and the new Sandy Rivera with Kings of Tomorrow "Show Me".. I will resuse them both shortly. They should not be buried in a somewhat personal set like this one.

I hope some of you will actually stay with me on this one and I absolutely promise that the next one with just be FUN.

Into the Deeper End

Grab a book, dim the lights, ignite the candles, close your eyes and let yourselves go..

After my foray into Tranceland, I felt the need to go Deep, with minimal to no samples , vocals, nor edits and just work on finding very current tunes from the Deeper end that would mix well.

Some may find it boring, others will soak in it blissfully.

11 out of 13 tracks were released from late march to late april 2012. It does not get more current than this.

Ready for a session in my beloved Trouse (Trance+House)?

Prince, Chicane, Fragma, Morgan Page, Above & Beyond, Nadia Ali, Tritonal. Give me some credit for the talent I gathered in this one!

Originally it was supposed to be 2 consecutive sets dwelling in my beloved fusion of Trance and House aka Trouse. Depending if I want to spend another fortnight at 135 bpm, I may or may not upload the second part.

To be consumed ONLY if you feel like pick-me-up & wake-me-up music. This is not a lounge mix! This is T R O U S E... and my aim is to get you on your feet..

Some very VERY good tracks are included, showcasing the current artists visiting Melbourne: Prince (do not miss “Dance 4 me”) and Morgan Page (who is up for it on the 5^th of May?).

Morgan Page is in town and it was high time to use "In the Air" and dwell back into "The Longest Road" feat. Lissie a favourite of mine.

Chicane: I love "Going Deep", the fusion of trip-hop, rap and trance/prog may annoy the Purists but is original, inspired and as far as I am concerned up there with the best of Faithless. Buy the new Chicane album, you will like it!

"Dance 4 Me" Prince is back in Melbourne and the collaboration with Purple Music (Jaime Lewis label) is fantastic. It is sexy, very Price yet very now.. Do not miss it.

"Free to Go" new track featuring Nadia Ali.. Can she do antyhing wrong?

And we finish with 2 Fragma tracks. The Spaniards are in great form. Balearic prog house with "What Love Can Do", which I edited Ibiza style with Otra Vez and "Thousand Times", which could become my kids new fav jam..

Deep in my kind of Groove

A few months ago this podcast was selected (as part of a random sample of online music), for a doctoral study by the Musicology Dept of UMich. Amongst the "open" questions I was asked was the following one: " Are there any of your sets you would like to make public but haven't due to self-censorship or fear that your target audience will not be interested?"

Got me thinking..

This set is an example of what I would not have normaly published.. Yet.. it is MY KIND OF GROOVE.. It has a bit of sugar, a bit on underground house, great deep meaningful tunes and a dash of indie/house and lots of vocal samples.

By "my kind of groove" I do not infer that this music is "better" or anything of the sort.. Just that it is "my kind of Groove.."

Before I get any messages and/or rantings on promotings drugs, let me make the following crystal clear: I do not condone drugs, prescribed or illegal. Drugs f@ck up people. As to marijuana in particular, the research is there for everyone to make the educated clever choice. There is a clear correlation between Marijuana and psychotic episodes on younger not fully formed brains. This is not an inference, but a statiscally significant correlation between usage and mental health in 15 to 25 y.o. Since the research cannot identify the genetic cluster, using Dope puts young minds at risk as no one knows if he/she may or may not be affected.

So DRUGS NOT MY KIND OF GROOVE AT ALL... MUSIC YES!

This being said why did I use the 50's samples? Because this mix is, as said in the Intro, what I had mixed but never wanted to publickly upload.. And if you follow me, you know that I have a HUGE weakness for vocal samples.. Be it cinematic or doctoral lectures etc.. And I was not going to sit on this sample forever!!

As the Intro says “ For all the lovers in the House tonight”.

First mix of 2012.. All about Divas.. pity I did not have time to slot in Whitney, she would have blended right in..

A blend of classic, soulful, funky vocal gems scattered on my hard drive.

My Valentine's gift to the House community at large. Whilst it is far from buying as polished as I would have liked it to be (little spare time currently), the set is solid and ought to bring a smile on your face. At the very minimum, you will have to love the female vocalists displayed here. One of the few criteria I gave myself to choose the playlist, was that the vocals had to be interpreted not just belted in pre-mix production and that most songs had to be "happy"..

It does start on the slow side, but do not get the wrong impression, you will sing-a -long and be on your feet by the end of the set.

In there ( scroll to 15m20s) a very, very special unreleased mash-up by Grant Nelson of “Fade” and “ Sun in my Eyes” straight from his secret DJ stash, which I caught on his podcast . As I am sure that I am more than twisting the copyright rules to even use it, I have asked for his permission.. If I were to be told to disallow the downloads, I will do it immediately.. So you better rush and download this just in case.. because the talent and creation shown here by the Admiral Nelson are just amazing!

Highlights: too many!

"Fade" a track I did not know before hearing Nelson’s mash-up) is just beautiful, with crafted ethereal vocals.. “Sun in my Eyes” always been one of my favourite jam, with great vocals, lyrics that actually make sense, just perfect.

“Never Let the Sun Fade” is Grant Nelson’s mash-ups, which I just borrowed and tried to connect with the original mix. “Cuddly Toy” old anthem, amazing re-interpretation from Beverley Knight and Soul UK.. Her take on “Mama Used to Say” is funky, yet soulful.. a real House diva.

“I Can’t Stop” fun and just dropped naturally in the middle of the set.. “So Many Times” one of my top five tracks and since this was a valentine present, I wanted to slot it in for Vivienne. Finally “You Got the Love” … Mark Knight & Florence & the Machine remix of this seminal house anthem.. with the original to follow to fittingly end this Valentine mix..

Hope you love this set as much as I do (in spite of the “rush to publish” aspect).

NY7 4/30 ... Title is a little brain teaser ... Work it out.

I was working on what could be on the menu for New Year's and whipped this one off in no time. Semi-live, straight out of Traktor with no re-editing or re-mastering whatsoever.. So compared with the 50+ versions I normally do, this is a tad raw and unpolished.

Funky tunes, upbeat, catchy French and Balearic Trance & House..

Being doubtful this trial for a New Year set will fit the crowd on the day, though I will use some of it, I am uploading it for the younger crowd (hint, hint for the title).

It's a fun, sometimes trancy, sometimes housy, sometimes trousy set with a few new tunes and a lot of Xtian's edits and retake on old favourites of ours.

SOS is maybe the tune I prefer as I had forgotten it at the bottom of the crate. "Lady" a 2011 remix of the old french house anthem.

I went completely overlength with the "Strings of Life" edit but once it is cut down to an acceptable length, it will work its magic.. "Freed From Desire", well another party anthem.. As you can see, we are not breaking any grounds here.

Finishing the "uber-structure" of the New Year set tonight, with a little bit of this one sprinkled throughout but targeted to a more discerning (read mature) crowd!!

Liquid Trance Mission.

On a Trance Mission! If you do not like trance, be it a 120 or 140 bpm, keep well away! You are warned! But if you are missing those days, download or stream and DO NOT SCROLL, this set is a Journey !!!

Once upon a time in Melbourne, Australia, there was an underground dance collective called “Liquid”.

It was a private, somewhat secret, dance club, which, once every two months, would send an sms to its members and announce on the day where the next reunion would be.

Members were co-opted, with a one gig trial, whence if you did not fit, you were blacklisted with no second chance.

Liquid was all about the music and the dance. What Liquid was NOT about was the clothes, the stilettoes, the designer hand-bags and the pre-requisite to “get sorted beforehand” (it was not about that either.). The only pre-requisites were: a bottle of water, good comfy trainers, a positive attitude and an able pair of dancing legs..

This community was diverse: the occasional pre-nekos mixing it up with the fluo & vinyl trance heads, the baggy tracksuit crowd and the somewhat more stylish goers. Yet, for all its diversity, it was a sharply homogenous group sharing a love for dance and music between like-minded peaceful people. They would not really hang out socially but for those few Liquid nights, it was strictly all about the DANCE!

The music was mainly Trance (the 80s/90’s Ibiza style), not the hard crap but more the classical/vocal happy trance and what we did not know at the time was going to become Progressive House. The night was always a journey and when the DJ was dropping the 135 bpm + tunes, we were just soaking it in as it was only delivered at the very peak off the journey.

This was SO last century.. 15 YEARS AGO.

This set is the soundtrack of what a "Liquid" night could be, if held today!

If anyone of those by-gone years read and hear this ( I won’t name and shame any of us) this is for YOU and ME!

Highlights: “No One on Earth” and “Love Is Not Enough” two A&B tracks are a cut above the rest, both courtesy of Christopher Doyle. I added Synth & pads but the structure of both tunes is so classical, the vocals so pure, this is Trance heaven. “Lonely Girl” is a catchy, hands up in the air Trance jam and will undoubtedly feature in my NY set.

Armin’s “Fallen Away” being such a rip off (surely intentional and credited) of 4 Strings ‘ “Take Me Away”, they had to follow each other in spite of my original intention not to use tunes I knew. As for Nadia Ali, well, I cannot go into Trance/Progressive House and not include something of Nadia.

Finally, “We Control the Sunlight”, I could see with Viv & the kids when I played the set for them that such a frantic pace was pushing the boundary but somehow I felt that it was the peak time tune befitting the end of the set..

Next upload will feature original takes on tunes we all know, more progressive & commercial than pure Trance… We are off to my beloved Trouse.

2011 Dec "Take Your Time Young Man.."

Obviously a wink and a nod to the mini "Mama Used to Say" mix and a private message to my nine year old son..

I am almost” housed-out” running out of good material and about to venture into Tranceland to get ready for the end of year festivities... Furthermore, in light of valuable comments posted on the web, I must confess that I did listen and have consequently tamed down the “gratuitous” sampling in this episode.

The gist of “Take Your Time Young Man” is to transport the listener from a deep/techy groove (I need street cred ;) ) to a happy, funky place by the end of the set. I will have you on your tippy toes dancing around the room within a very small half hour!

We start comfortably sat in Barcelona chairs in the back room, with a low, deep underground club vibe, filtered and tweaked to the max all destined to awaken your aural senses . Do not be discouraged ! Slowly some snippets of funk are introduced and sure enough we progress to an old skool soulful place to accommodate the glucose addict residing in all of us. Finally, we leave our comfy chairs, step in the main room and shake our collective a$$es to big club tunes…

Well, at least this was the initial idea. If by the end of this set, you have not felt the urge to stamp your feet and lift your hands… I simply failed…

A mini-mix, within the mix, with “Mama Used to Say” which, I thought would be a fun old skool tune for my children to be introduced to onto a Sandy Rivera’s extravaganza to mark his full return to big tunes in 2012.

Highlights: there are no weak tunes in this mix and I am surprised how current it turn out to be (many tracks released in the 3rd quarter of 2011). To raise my street cred I had a play with the 2 fist tracks with filters etc.. But from " Deep House (Inside Me)" you are in pure house bliss. I absolutely love the retake of "Mama Used to Say", so melodic, so well well produced and Akram Sedkaoui has a crystal voice. Those guys brought us "Each & Everyda"y this year, they are on a roll!

In "Walk Away" ATFC teamed up with Lisa Shaw and showed that all we need is a great vocalist, a great tune and great production.. Not so hard ;).. "Stealing Love" from Grant Nelson, need I say more.. And then I had a play with Sandy Rivera's great tunes of the year.. with a remix of "I Need to Love Me" not to miss.

To sum up, it would appear that the "old guys" Grant Nelson, Rivera, Layabouts, ATFC has showing all the young ones, that they can wipe them off the charts at any time..

Travelling to Tranceland (unless I managed to finish off one mix I have on the hard drive and can't wrap up) as I need to prepare a New Eve Set.. and a brand new Traktor S2 deck is waiting for me still in the box.. Panting in anticipation..

Just Come with Me!

Here is what I got up to whilst travelling in Asia..

Deep House with a soft & sexy undertone, add a sprinkling of tech-house with a dash of hip-hop. The ambition of blending it all might have been betrayed by the execution but what the heck.. I had fun with this one.

Join my journey and fly with me into the Deeper, sexy side. The set is melodic but eclectic and at times...challenging. It includes some original edits and two samples, which I could not identify (though I am sure some of you will), taken from C&M Production's sets.

From 118 to 127 bpm, with loops , sliced beats, samples and change of keys We are travelling at the rather gregarious speed of sound (not the speed of light), towards a Deep n' Sexy climax... Just come with me ;)

To consume at work, at home or for a long journey.

It starts as a very accesible chill/lounge set but might challenge some listeners later into the mix. My advice, just let it roll and take you over.

I had 3 hours of new tunes mixed ( all courtesy of the long flights to and from Australia), I will post the second part once I see how this one is received.

Highlights: Shur I Khan "The Sun Rising" is a ripper tune, rich, very well produced. "Night Time" (Crazy Penis Remix) reminds me of Faithless ( now here is a mash-up idea for the future), "Sweet Melody" is just that.. As to the Aki Bergen jams ending the mix, they all point out to an artist producing faultless rich Deep gems...

I have 2 sets lined up, the continuation of this one and the up-tempo mix I have been unable to wrap up for a month. I also have the vague outline of a trancy/house set, which I will have ready for the Xmas/NYE parties to come..

This set will make you... Happy.. This set will make you...Smile.. When was the last time you heard 16 good tunes in a row? This is Cafe Del Mar and Hotel Costes as they should have stayed, but the faulty amateur version :)

A collection of my favourite chill-out beach tunes.. All (but one) chosen for their melodic and musical perfection, their amazing harmonies, their flawless production and mastering..

I've had a version of this set on the drive for a while. Since I am struggling with my next up-tempo one, I thought it was high time, to polish, dust & finish this down-tempo one, add a few current tunes and give it a geeky fun intro.

I am telling you.. this one is worth the space on your hard drive..

A word on the title & the picture : Cosmic Background Radiation (CBR) is the radiation left over from early development of the universe, basically this picture (NASA) is the closest we will ever get to "see" the Bing Bang.. Before this moment.. no light.. hence no image.. When some unruly Swiss neutrino, which apparently travelled faster than light, appeared on the news last week, I had a little epiphany and the Geek in me took over.. Anyhow, what you see here is well.. Everything, you, me and the complete universe and even Unkle Albert... just really, really, REALLY young..

Highlight: All tunes are good (really) but..Do not Miss "Lost Soul" from Bliss because of my intro, this is pure perfection.. Not House just pure perfection in melody, harmony etc.. "Universal Unfolding".. a classic balearic offering with a fun upbeat remix to follow.. "Snow White" one of those small tune, which grows on you. "Perfectly" from The Layabouts.. no need to say anything just listen.. "We Fall Down" a gem as well.. Told you everything is good in this one.. Woah.. well I needed something for the bridge and match the beat so.. here it is and also I thought the Beatles lyrics sample was unexpected and interesting..

Sarah, this one is for you! Safe travel. We shall miss Bear and are expecting to be kept informed of its future Catalonian adventures.. Incidently we will miss you as well..

For the Barcelona bound Sarah & Bear: a vocal, beachy, breeezy, groovy and sometimes deep set. Beffiting the occasion of your going away.. with schadenfreunde, lots of sugar but also a dollop of spices and a dash of tears.

Initially mixed in Russia but recompiled here to fit the occasion andgive the new KOT " I Need to Love Me" the lead of the set...

Current tunes but with a couple of oldies, ranging from Deep jams to Nu-Disco.. Some purists will pass on this one but rest assured that it is a very worked set with happy tunes and sun-rays all along..

Highlights: I reordered (remixed) the whole set to present you with the newest release of KOT " I need to Love Me" as I thought it ought to open the set in case some of you only stream the first 5' ( how dare you? ;). Fantastic track and Sandy Rivera is now back in full force.

The classic Frankie Knuckles/J. Principle "I'll take you there" was in my bag for a while but I was waiting for the right remix to include it ( Frankie Knuckles...another one having a good year). "The Cure & The Cause" included because it is one of my favourtie tracks for the past 5 years and I was listening to a fab set from C&M whilst travelling and thought it was high time to revisit the DJ Meme remix.

More current "In It Together" from Human life, the club hit of the 2011 summer, Knuckles' remix, what more can be said.. And "Take Me Back" Sandy Rivera feat. April to bring the set to a close in a nice loop with the intro tune.

Enjoy, might be too vocal, too commercial, too beach for some House afficionados but perfectly filtting for Sarah's going away and was what came out of the bag in the second week of my Russian trip..

Deep & Soulful Journey in Russia (Глубокие и душевный в России)..

Mixed whilst travelling around Russia, Turn out less Deep than intended, with some soulful and techy grooves. Since I had time on my side (no kids) I tried a lot of things on Traktor and did my first full mash-ups.. Imagine that I was on a plane with 3 decks opened on Traktor plus the sample deck.. and I was asked if I wanted dinner.. "No coffee only.. This is confusing enough!".

Though far from being perfect, I love this set.. And the dissonant, syncopated part at 59:45:00 to 1:00:00 is sort of intentional. i just wanted that live, techy feel when the DJ is in the mix and playing with the crowd, which wonders "that's not quite right is it?"

3 weeks of travel.. China and Russia.. It gave me the time to learn new tricks (for me) on Traktor, sample and catalog all the music I have bought in the last 3 months and I have enough lined-up tunes for about another 3 sets. Yeah! This being said, I am so happy to be back home with Viv and the kids. Music will suffer but sanity will prevail!

Some very current tunes ( a couple release last week!!). One very special mash-up from me (my first official) and I am fairly happy with it and a very special jam at the end.. one of my all time favourite tune with Finally and So Many times.. the Shane D remix of Silence..

If any of you do not know what Deep Houseis , this set is a good introduction to it.. Deep House is what you put when you want to read a book or when you do not want the music to directly take over your mind but insideously and slowly you WILL fall under the spell of the Deep..

Highlights: well looking at the playlist, I managed to pull out a farily current set without too many repeats of previous jams.

"No Superstar" killer euro tune with Mr Pink vocals. I quite like my take on "Keep On Rising" with the Turkish sample but I am partial."How Would You Feel" old David Morales tune which I love seeing my kids dance to.. The trance mix of "Bodyswerve" is another family favourite and Morillo's "Stronger" might become an anthem... As for the Avicii's take on "Finally" this one is thanks to my nephew... The file's encoding is very average, as it is a YouTube bootleg, but is a sure buy as soon as it is commercially released. Thanks to Hugo & Julian for making me aware of it and I hope you like the Xtian WTF Extended Version.
